The most important thing to recognize is that you can do all the right things in the gym, but if you're not providing your body with the proper nutrition, than you'll never get any results. Eating properly is the only way to build muscle, but there is also another point to be made; when you eat it. You should be eating smaller meals more often because your muscles repair consistently throughout the day. This will make sure your muscles always have enough nutrition to repair themselves.
As for working out, I found the best way to increase muscle mass is through compound exercises. These are the ones where you work a lot of different muscle groups at the same time. I found the deadlifts and squats to be the most effective muscle building workouts you can do.
